OVERVIEW
Promoting Sustainable Food Practices Through Innovation
Zero Waste is a university project that addresses food waste by partnering with local restaurants to resell goods nearing their expiry date. This allows businesses to recover costs while preventing perfectly good food from going to waste. The platform connects consumers with these businesses, offering discounted, high-quality food items through an intuitive website and mobile app.
This vibrant food-themed vending machines plays a key role in reducing waste, ensuring food is consumed before it expires, and helping local businesses save on disposal costs. By making sustainable choices easy and appealing, these vending machines help create a more environmentally-friendly food system.
VENDING MACHINE DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
The design of the vending machines is both colorful and modern, featuring bright, vibrant hues with food-themed graphics that attract attention. These machines are equipped with large LED panel screens that serve multiple purposes, including interactive gaming and information display.
The final design stands out with its playful, food-inspired aesthetic that appeals to all ages. The prominent LED screen invites users to engage with a fun and educational video game, designed to promote awareness of food waste reduction.
GAME CONCEPT & DESIGN
THE COLLAB TEAM
The project focuses on brand strategy and identity, ensuring the seamless integration of the game design with the vending machine concept. Doris played a crucial role in advocating for a bright, eye-catching design. She also crafted the mockups of the vending machine by using Photoshop and designed the logo, contributing significantly to the playful and visually striking look of the vending machine.
The final game, inspired by the simplicity of Flappy Bird, is designed to be engaging and easy for everyone to enjoy. Additional retro game concepts were being explored to appeal to a broader audience and further promote sustainability in a fun and memorable way.

MOOD BOARD
The game, inspired by Flappy Bird & Pico Park (characters), features simple yet engaging gameplay. Players control a fruit or vegetable character, navigating through trash cans as obstacles. The game is designed to be accessible and fun for all ages, subtly encouraging players to think about food waste in an interactive way.
Accessing the game is easy—players simply scan a QR code, with their mobile phones serving as controllers. Upon completing the game, players are rewarded with coupons that can be redeemed for food discounts at the vending machine.
The game’s aesthetic features vibrant, colorful fruit and vegetable characters that add a playful and engaging visual appeal. The gameplay is intuitive, ensuring it can be enjoyed by a wide range of players while reinforcing the message of reducing food waste. Designed using Figma software, the game includes a well-crafted demo that enhances the overall user experience.
